So, how does it work?

The freshly installed app is empty. You have to download at least one of the datasets. A dataset is a package of data, possibly with images or audio files, about a group of species or higher taxa (groups of species in a biologic systematics). The datasets are pre-packed either for certain region (like "Birds of Bhutan") or global (like "Monkeys").

It doesn't work!

Do you have a current version? If not please update the app. You can also try to reinstall the app. If problems remain, you can write us at jan@bioguideapp.com or file a direct bug report.

What version of the app am I using?

Just go to "About" in the menu.

I'm having problems downloading a dataset.

Are you connected to the internet? Did you update the app? If the problem still persists, you can try to reinstall the app, or write us at jan@bioguideapp.com or file a direct bug report.

Is the app available for iPhone? Or for ...?

No, it's only for Android phones and tablets, version 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" and higher. There is a plan to make an iPhone version, especially if there is a demand...

Is the app free?

Yes, but only for up to two datasets. For example, you can download all "Mammals of Germany" and "Boletes" for free. If you want also "Birds of Alaska", you have to purchase the full version. Once you do that, you can download all the other remaining datasets for free.

What about my privacy?

We collect only anonymous statistics about downloads of the app and the datasets. Nothing more.

Does the app automatically identify animals, plants, fungi?

Not at the moment, although we are testing automatic bird song recognition using device's microphone, so it may come already during the summer of 2016. However even now, BioGuide can help you with identification - you can narrow down the search using criteria like color, size or morphology, and then compare the remaining candidates' images and text descriptions. As for an intelligent image recognition, please note that most animals are too fast and/or far to catch them on a phone camera. For plants, you can try other apps like Pl@ntNet, but in general, AI is still in its childhood.

Is the app available in other languages than English?

Common names of some of the species or other taxa are available in a variety of languages: Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chechen, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, Georgian, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kazakh, Korean, Latin, Lithuanian, Malay, Norwegian (Bokmål and Nynorsk), Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Volapük. Just install the dataset and you have it.

Most of the app is translated into Czech, and to a lesser extent into French, German and Spanish. Some parts, like the biological terminology used when searching or displaying traits, is translated into many of the above languages - (translations are based mostly on Wikidata).

Texts from Wikipedia are available in: Catalan, Chinese (Mandarin), Czech, Dutch, German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Swedish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.

We plan to broaden and deepen the language support in time (write us your opinion!).

There are many naturalist apps. Why yours?

BioGuide has extensive global coverage and can be used offline.

There seem to be two version of your app at Amazon Appstore.

One of them you can get only through Amazon Underground, it is up-to-date and for free, but not available for everyone. The other is an old version which will be probably updated in the beginning of 2016.

I want to buy the full version, but I don't want tu use Google Play, Amazon Store or anything like that.

Please download and install the APK from this site, and contact us to get a license code.
